3D and more research.
I have started using sketchup to create a 3D town to plan out my map which will eventually be brought in to Unreal so that you can walk around it. I have also bought the history channel box set 'The Crusades' for research so that I can find some key events to base my game around. It is also really good for inspiration as it is a docu-drama and has a lot of real life locations and costumes which I am bringing into my work.

Textured Concept Art - Templar Knight

Here is another finished character with textures. Photographic textures are applied to the character in Photoshop, and then shadows and lighting are applied to different parts of the character to give the picture more dynamics. It is quite a long process from start to finish; the most difficult part was the horses as the lighting reflects differently on their fur at different angles and as some of the horses were made from several different photos of real horses it took quite a bit of editing and tweaking to get them all to match.
Here are some examples of the development process. The sketches are taken into Photoshop and then re-drawn in there. The textures are the applied.

October
Throughout the summer holidays I did a lot of research into the history of the crusades and of the time period. This is to give my game story more depth and realism. I also researched the biblical stories of the war of heaven and the major characters in it. I have also obtained a religious consultant to keep that aspect of the game true to the original stories.
